The Planning Group carries quite a heavy burden because of the necessity to keep abreast of legislation, RBC policy and all development proposals in Farnborough, as well as any further afield that may impact the town. They arrange presentations on important local developments, which have included the Aldershot Urban Extension, Farnborough Town Centre; the Rushmoor Plan, the Airport expansion and the Farnborough Access Plan.
Drawing on local knowledge, The Farnborough Society asks its members to scrutinize planning applications relating to Farnborough and flag up any issues of concern. The Planning Group will then convene to discuss action, which at an early stage will likely be a meeting with Principal Planning Officers at Rushmoor Borough Council, to gain a clear understanding of the situation and the options open to us.
The Planning Group will change according to the issues under review, since all members of The Farnborough Society can elect to join it at any time if a development or emerging issue affects them, or interests them. Whenever the Group convenes, the first order of business will be the election of a Chairman, who will take responsibility for the project in hand, including reports to the Executive Committee and written responses to consultations.
As key stakeholders, The Farnborough Society relies on its Planning Group to respond to all consultations on policy documents relating to planning from Rushmoor Borough Council.
The Group also participates in Cluster Meetings with other local civic societies to address cross-border issues and to share best practice. Where necessary, it organises planning seminars to address changes to legislation.
Planning Report Dec 17
The Farnborough Society takes its role as a key stakeholder very seriously and we take an active part in the development of local planning policy. It was, for instance, because of our response to the Core Strategy consultation, and later our representation to the Inspector, that the need for cultural facilities in the Civic Quarter has become a key part of that area’s redevelopment plan.
When large developments are proposed, either in Farnborough or in adjacent borough where they will impact Farnborough, the Planning Group will respond fully, drawing on legislation and policy in support of its position. Where possible, we will arrange for the developer to give a presentation to help inform our decision.
